We should stop being grateful for having these stressful feelings when they persist while all the stressors (stress-causing factors ) are gone. Do you know why? Stress that becomes chronic bears anxiety.
Common external stressors are:
- Stress at work or at school
- Stress in a personal relationship (a divorce, a breakup)
- Stress from financial problems
- Stress from an emotional trauma (the death of a person you love)

I have never had any anxiety problems before.
I was living far away from home when my life was turned upside down by a traumatic experience. All the stressful feelings that at first helped me survive literally and emotionally gave their place to anxiety.
I started having most of the symptoms of anxiety
- Insomnia and concentration difficulties
- Palpitations and dry mouth
- Gastrointestinal problems
- Sweating and trembling
- Weakness and muscle tension
- Panic attacks (mine would last for hours)
None of the above symptoms were easy to cope with, trust me.
But there were some other symptoms that I would describe as “mentally and psychologically devastating”.
I was experiencing a constant fear of losing my mind and of being “nuts”. I started not being able to think and act reasonably and couldn’t control my emotions.
I tried to fix my problems on my own. I have always been determined and strong and have managed to overcome serious problems in the past. But anxiety was a new enemy and wasn’t armed well enough to fight against it.
When anxiety takes control, letting time pass by without seeking help isn’t a wise thing to do.
I became aware of that when I started going through the worst of all the feelings, experiences or symptoms anxiety can cause you: depersonalization.

I had to be taken to hospital suffering from numerous panic attacks and a severe form of anxiety that had exhausted my body and mind- the psychiatrist informed me that I was “triumphantly” entering the early stages of depression- before my system’s “stress response” started to work properly.
I was given a good kick in the a** by my body and mind and I finally managed to take control of my life and walk away from the source of pain that made my soul hurt.
The nasty thing about anxiety is that you can’t run away from it. You can move out, change the city or the country you live in, even move to another planet! It’s no use, anxiety follows you like a shadow because it lingers inside of you. And keeps haunting you unless you decide to get rid of it once and for all.
I was prescribed anxiolytics which I took for a couple of months. I admit it. I have sinned! But not for long!

Genetic predisposition or radical changes in lifestyle and diet may lower the levels of this neurotransmitter in our system. But most of us experience a serotonin deficiency for a simple reason: our own anxiety has messed up our brain’s chemistry resulting in poor production and use of the neurotransmitter.
This can be translated as “lack of balance”, don’t you think?
Prozac and Zoloft belong to a class of drugs called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) prescribed to treat anxiety and depression. SSRIs are believed to limit the absorption of serotonin, hence, permitting the increase of the levels of the neurotransmitter in our system.
