CBD Gummies and Anxiety-Sweet Relief or Waste of Money?

By | 08/05/2019

People all over the world talk about and search “CBD Gummies and anxiety” on the web.

It’s a strange combination, don’t you think?

In my mind, these tiny, colorful and delicious gummy bears are associated with memories of my childhood when I was playing with my friends, with no problems or preoccupations and a bunch of gummy bears in my pocket…

The only worry, I had, was this: please, don’t make them finish!

The good old days passed along with our childhood and we were all kicked into the jungle called “adult life”. Our pockets are empty of gummy bears and full of “musts”.

We run all day trying to check off our chores lists: get the kids to the dentist, accompany them to their sports practice, pay the bills, cook, iron, clean, mow the lawn, pay the IRS, get stuck in traffic while Dolly Parton reminds us that we should be there “9 to 5”!

It’s stress and anxiety we have in our pockets, now. And, certainly, their bitter taste doesn’t remind us of the joyful sweetness of our gummy bears.

Wait! What if gummies COULD fight anxiety? Wouldn’t our lives be more relaxed and cheery? Would we be able to sense the real taste of life again?

How are stress and anxiety related?

Most people think  that stress and anxiety are the same.

Well, they aren’t.

Stress is part of our life. And we should be thankful for it.

No, I am not kidding!

All the stress feelings you experience are your body’s reaction to a demanding or threatening situation.

Who should you thank for your promotion- besides yourself, of course? Stress! Your body’s reaction to the challenge, helped you stay focused, concentrated, motivated and determined.

If it weren’t for stress to raise your alertness, you wouldn’t have avoided that car accident by slamming the brakes just on time.

We should stop being grateful for having these stressful feelings when they persist while all the stressors (stress-causing factors ) are gone. Do you know why? Stress that becomes chronic bears anxiety.

Common external stressors are:

Chronic-stress-causes-anxiety
  • Stress at work or at school
  • Stress in a personal relationship (a divorce, a breakup)
  • Stress from financial problems
  • Stress from an emotional trauma (the death of a person you love)
  • Stress from health problems

I have never had any anxiety problems before.

Until recently.

I was living far away from home when my life was turned upside down by a traumatic experience. All the stressful feelings that at first helped me survive literally and emotionally gave their place to anxiety.

I started having most of the symptoms of anxiety

  • Insomnia and concentration difficulties
  • Palpitations and dry mouth
  • Gastrointestinal  problems
  • Sweating and trembling
  • Weakness and muscle tension
  • Panic attacks  (mine would last for hours)

None of the above symptoms were easy to cope with, trust me.

But there were some other symptoms that I would describe as “mentally and psychologically devastating”.

I was experiencing a constant fear of losing my mind and of being “nuts”. I started not being able to think and act reasonably and couldn’t control my emotions.

I tried to fix my problems on my own. I have always been determined and strong and have managed to overcome serious problems in the past. But anxiety was a new enemy and wasn’t armed well enough to fight against it.

When anxiety takes control, letting time pass by without seeking help isn’t a wise thing to do.

I became aware of that when I started going through the worst of all the feelings, experiences or symptoms anxiety can cause you: depersonalization.

Have you ever felt that you and your body are two separate things? Have you ever had the impression that your memories are not really yours but of another person you don’t know? Have you ever experienced a total lack of emotions and normal reactions to any social, environmental or physical stimulus? Have you ever felt and behaved like a robot? Have you ever missed being able to cry?

If your answer is no, I am glad to inform you that you are lucky.

If your answer is yes, then I should welcome you to the club of the depersonalized victims of severe anxiety.

I had to be taken to hospital suffering from numerous panic attacks and a severe form of anxiety that had exhausted my body and mind- the psychiatrist informed me that I was “triumphantly” entering the early stages of depression- before my system’s “stress response” started to work properly.

At last!

I was given a good kick in the a** by my body and mind and I finally managed to take control of my life and walk away from the source of pain that made my soul hurt.

But …

The nasty thing about anxiety is that you can’t run away from it. You can move out, change the city or the country you live in, even move to another planet! It’s no use, anxiety follows you like a shadow because it lingers inside of you. And keeps haunting you unless you decide to get rid of it once and for all.

I was prescribed anxiolytics which I took for a couple of months. I admit it. I have sinned! But not for long!

My father’s psoriasis problem led me to CBD oil. Despair mixed with determination to get rid of anxiolytics and start living again urged me to give cannabidiol a chance to help me fight my anxiety problems.

CBD oil and anxiety

I am a huge advocate of natural remedies and health and beauty products and at the same time aware of the fact that big pharmaceutical companies create clients and not cures.

Having to deal with my Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD, I was interested in finding out if there were any chances of treating my condition naturally and without depending on any prescribed medicine.

I’ll tell you a secret: I was scared to death of the possibility of becoming addicted to them!

I was lucky enough to be supported by my therapist and his unconventional ideas and beliefs.

What started as research driven by need and curiosity was quickly transformed into a passion for this substance and its health benefits.

Cannabidiol is connected to our Endocannabinoid System which is responsible for the promotion and maintenance of equilibrium in our body.

Although CBD  itself has low affinity to both the receptors of ECS, it functions as a kick starter for our body’s endocannabinoids to keep interacting with the CB1 and CB2 receptors obliging them to work at full speed and optimal capacity for our health’s sake.

It has the ability to use the gamma-aminobutyric corrosive neurotransmitter as a messenger to convey the appropriate information to our neurons. The messages are similar to our body’s “stress response” when we are in danger: “BACK OFF”.

Our neurons receive the messages and react to them giving the order to our body to obey. The results are evident: anxiety is lessened and the sensory system is quieted.

Let me give you some information about what science has discovered (the teacher in me has woken up!)

Have you ever heard of the term serotonin (5-HT)? Are the words  Prozac and Zoloft familiar to you?

All anxiety sufferers have one thing in common: low levels of serotonin (which is known for its contribution to feelings of happiness).

Genetic predisposition or radical changes in lifestyle and diet may lower the levels of this neurotransmitter in our system. But most of us experience a serotonin deficiency for a simple reason: our own anxiety has messed up our brain’s chemistry resulting in poor production and use of the neurotransmitter.

Fight Anxiety With CBD

This can be translated as “lack of balance”, don’t you think?

Prozac and Zoloft belong to a class of drugs called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) prescribed to treat anxiety and depression. SSRIs are believed to limit the absorption of serotonin, hence, permitting the increase of the levels of the neurotransmitter in our system. Their efficacy is disputed and outweighed by their side effects (no wonder why the FDA requires that SSRIs carry black box warnings )

According to a 2016 study, CBD enhances

both serotonergic and glutamate cortical signaling through a 5-HT1A receptor-dependent mechanism”

In other words, CBD has the same effects as SSRIs.

There is more good news! Not only does it act in an exact way as Prozac and Zoloft (without their adverse side effects), it acts FASTER than them!

I was convinced!

CBD oil became a part of my daily routine. A tiny sublingual dose in the morning and a bit more generous one at night.

My condition was significantly improving but there was something missing.

After some time and while I was combatting anxiety systemically, I realized that the “beast” had been transformed into occasional anxiety and continued its attacks in unexpected moments during the day: while hanging around with friends, for example. There were a pattern and a trigger cause. My mind was the culprit for bringing back memories and fears that could steal my breath away causing me minor panic attacks.

I had to do something about it.

And I did!

I introduced CBD gummies to my daily routine!

CBD gummies to cope with anxiety during the day

The market offers a great variety of CBD infused edible products. You can find CBD gummies, CBD chocolate, CBD shots, CBD cake pops, CBD coffee, CBD popcorn (!!), CBD Honey Sticks. You name it!

Coca-Cola is preparing to launch a wellness beverage containing cannabidiol and the first CBD-infused burger is being tested right now!

The most popular of all CBd edibles are gummies.

Made from natural ingredients, these colorful and palatable candies are an effective, discrete and secure way to consume cannabidiol during the day.

CBD is a non-psychotropic and non-intoxicating natural substance so there is no risk for an overdose in case you are carried away and consume more CBD gummies.

CBD Gummy Bears
CBD Gummies to Cope with Anxiety

There is one GREAT risk, though!

I almost lost a friend when I refused to give him one! Ι an not a stingy person; I  just hadn’t had any extra candies to protect myself in case of an anxiety attack. Ok, they are costly products but friendship is far more valuable than money, don’t you think?

I sacrificed myself that time and shared my gummies with my friend. But, ever since, I carry some ordinary  gummy bears to share with my friends when they ask for them. The trick works!

Gummies are found in a range of CBD concentrations per candy. They are sold either in packs or bottles in various counts. Since there is no exact dosage each one of us has to find his “sweet spot” by experimenting.

I started with a 30 count CBD gummies 500mg bottle. As I told you, I was treating my anxiety systemically with a CBD oil tincture so I needed the gummies to support me during the day.

Do you know what I did? I cut my gummies in half!  Each piece gave me a bit more than 8 mg of CBD. Whenever my occasional anxiety symptoms worsened I increased the dosage.

I still cut my gummies in half and I still don’t share them with friends that don’t need their benefits.

What makes gummies so popular?

There are different methods of consuming  CBD. Each method depends on the form of the product and CBD products differ in terms of bioavailability.

CBD oils and tinctures are administered sublingually. This consumption method has the third highest bioavailability after vaping and transdermal patches: 12-40%

When you administer CBD sublingually the mucous membranes under your tongue absorb the cannabinoid and most of its molecules enter your bloodstream,  bypassing your digestive system

Sublingual administration means faster delivery of the CBD effects.

On the other hand edibles have a relatively low bioavailability:  4-20%.

Cannabidiol existing in an edible that you eat and swallow has to pass through your digestive system and to be entirely metabolized by your liver. This process is time consuming and the effects of CBD aren’t delivered quickly.

But they last longer.

My strategy against the occasional attacks of the beast has changed. I’ve studied the way my body warns me way ahead the onset of a panic attack, I consume my gummy and relax because I feel protected.

CBD Gummy

I don’t know if it is a placebo reaction or not but even though CBD cannot do its magic in a jiffy when it is in an edible form, the magic seems to happen instantly.

Is it because I feel safe knowing that I will not suffer?

Or is it because CBD gummies are so darn tasteful?

Most consumers- me included- choose gummies over other edible forms of CBD because of their taste (Theresa would choose CBD chocolate, I bet my head on this!).

Moreover, CBD gummies are characterized by the convenience of having the characteristics of a pill or capsule (solid and compact) without being a pill or capsule. They are discrete, delicious and joyful.

I  have rarely had any panic attacks while waiting my gummies to deliver their effects. This can’t be explained by logic, bioavailability, dosage, metabolization  and all this scientific stuff.

I believe that gummies are linked with the happy-go-lucky attitude of my childhood and the carefree memories of that time at a subconscious level. I sincerely can’t explain it and I don’t care. What interests me is that they work!

A couple of CBD gummies a day keep anxiety away

There are people that take CBD to maintain and promote health and well being. By boosting their Endocannabinoid System they achieve homeostasis (=balance). Researchers indicate that an Endocannabinoid system deficiency may be the culprit of many ailments.

Most of the cannabidiol users, though, utilize it for its potential to treat several health conditions.

Before you choose your gummies, study the amount of CBD they contain for two reasons: dosage and cost.

If you choose gummies with low CBD concentration you will need a handful of candies to get the right dose for you. This will inevitably increase the cost.

Sometimes people choose gummies that cost less. Low price means that they contain a minimum amount of CBD. To get the right dose that will give them the desired effects, they have to consume more gummies. On the long run, this turns to be more pricey.

Remember that sometimes a cheap product may cost you more.

Which brands should you buy gummies from?

Why don’t you try the CBD gummies my trusted CBD oil companies offer you? VerifiedCBD, Joy Organics and Avid Hemp are reliable and transparent CBD oil brands and their sourcing, extraction methods, lab tests, and clients reviews prove their claims regarding the quality of their products.

So, if you look for an efficient and discrete way to consume CBD oil during the day, don’t think twice: CBD oil Gummies are an excellent solution!

They taste great, they look great and they can make you feel great. Who would ask for more?

I wouldn’t! Would you?

Although I take CBD oil daily, your gummies sound like a quick hit when you need it for attacks. I do suffer from panic attacks and anxiety.
You state that dissolving the gummy under your tongue will give you results faster, how fast will you see results. Sometimes when I am in a crowded place, I have to leave to get some relief from my inner thoughts. I am wondering if a gummy before going out would help.

CBD edibles take an hour maximum to deliver their effects. -20 minutes on an empty stomach. Knowing this, you can use CBD gummies to get help and cope with your -kind of- social anxiety. I have experimented on myself and my timings are getting almost precise. My anxiety worsens when I feel unprotected, knowing my gummies are there make the situation less threatening to me

Are you pregnant or something? Did he explain why or does he have no clue what CBD oil is? Did he prescribe any anxiolytics instead?

I’m glad to see the list of benefits that CBD adds, this one for anxiety. I can be susceptible to panic attacks when either in an unfamiliar place or in a large crowd. In fact, the symptoms you described for depersonalization is exactly what I feel in those situations.

Sadly, this has prohibited my traveling for the last eleven years but now that CBD is out in the open, I’m like, “I might give travel a shot,” especially if I can pick up a high quality dose of CBD gummies which I’d prefer much more over anything pharmaceutical.

Like you, I’m a huge advocate for natural remedies first and will try them over anything big pharma related. Now that CBD is in the mainstream now more than ever before, my dream of traveling may have just awakened. And I pray it does, because I really do want to see the world with zero restraints.

Please do something with your panic attacks; they are able to ruin your mental and physical health. I know it because I’ve lived it and still fighting against it. I need to travel too, it gives me life and joy wandering around in new places. But unfortunately, I am stuck here for the time being. SO ..Make sure the first country you visit is mine, Todd! Promise? And don’t worry about travel restrictions regarding CBD oil ! I ‘ll share my gummies with you!!

OMG!!? Really??? I love gummy bears next to mocha and chocolates of course. However, this CBD is really becoming popular for all the right reasons.

I want to know more about this new product. My only issue is if it will be allowed in New Zealand. Our laws regarding legalising Hemp oil etc still has not changed.

I would love to eat those gummy bears if they will take away my moments of anxiety attacks.

Please send me more info to my email about CBD.

    Thanks.

    Hi Effie,

I am glad that CBD oil and gummies are helping your symptoms and condition. I believe, as a health care professional, that CBD is so natural and effective to you that it is enhancing your will power to get better or conquer the symptoms as it comes.

In my 26 years of practice, I have seen a multitude amount of patients that would take anti-depressants, anti-anxiety, and antipsychotic medications but they are the ones that are mostly frequenting the hospitals. You are right, the side effects of their medications most of the time outweighed the benefits. But the sad part is, they get prescribed with higher doses or get switched with more potent medications to relieve their symptoms faster.

It is a sad cycle and frustrating too, as I have seen how they gained weight, became hooked, they end up with tremors, etc. Needless to say, Effie, I have seen the worst case of mental issues. I was even attacked numerous times before by patients due to symptoms flare up. My colleagues and I were actually joking for all hospitals to install an Ativan mist by the nurse’s station in case a patient gets an attack and tried to hurt staff.

Anyways, CBD oil and gummies or even chocolates and popcorns sounds like a good idea to me. My question is what if a child accidentally ingest them, will there be harmful effects?

Thank you for this wonderful post. Take care.

The only FDA approved medicine containing CBD is Epidiolex and is prescribed to 2-year-olds and above. There are sources suggesting that CBD is safe for children. There are people in the groups and forums I follow that report administering CBD oil to children with autism, anxiety disorders and epilepsy. This being said, you understand there will be no harmful effects. I am a cautious person, Nida, so my advice, the advice of a mother is not to take any risks when there is no reason to risk. My son is an adult but if he were a child I would be careful not to share my CBD gummies with him, not even accidentally. There are a lot of ways to prevent your child from ingesting a medicine, right?

I love gummies, and yes I will admit I buy vitamin gummies…seems like I am getting a “treat”. I have seen the gummies in the store when I get CBD oil and they are a bit expensive. My worry is that I will eat too many of them LOL. So if I am really stressed out, you are saying that if I eat a gummy, that will help? And what if I cannot control myself and eat too many? Will that have consequences LOL?

If your worry is getting high, you know there is no way CBD can give you one. If you are worried about going on overdose stop worrying; CBD is non-intoxicating. The only consequence you will have to face if you eat them all is that they will finish and as you said they are a bit expensive. Think positive about it: besides treating your anxiety CBD gummies will help you with discipline and self-control! I know it’s tough because gummies are irresistible -I’ve been there LOL

This is great. I think the gummies are a great idea for anxiety. I’ve used cbd oil in the past and have had excellent results from it. From sleeping to pains in my back. I think that the gummies would be a good addition for me because I love candy and my anxiety hasn’t been doing so great lately. Thanks so much for sharing this. I’ll be looking into grabbing a bag.

Yep! You can keep your head because you are right about Theresa and chocolate. 🙂 The lightbulb came on when you said, “You can find CBD gummies, CBD chocolate, CBD shots, CBD cake pops, CBD coffee, CBD popcorn (!!), CBD Honey Sticks. You name it!” I’m trying to figure out how to produce M&M-type candies with dark chocolate and CBD. Chocolate melts slowly so (what’s that fancy scientific word you use?) it will allow the CBD to be absorbed very nicely under the tongue. Mmmm.

Thanks for sharing so openly about your story and anxiety issues. So glad you are managing it naturally now.

And now I know I will never be able to get a genuine CBD gummy out of you… sneaky!!

So how long after eating the gummies should one be expecting its effects? Like 1 to 2 hours?

Joo, I said that I don’t share them with friends that don’t need their benefits! I would, definitely, share them with you and with anyone that would be helped by them! For the rest of my friends, I have just gummies, not CBD gummies to offer!
Theoretically, it takes about an hour to feel the effects of a CBD oil edible. 20 minutes on an empty stomach. The more food you’ve eaten before consuming them, the longer the effects will take to kick in.
